The opening scene starts with a high angle tilt downwards onto the main characters (the friend group) to demonstrate a picture of everyone in the film. Additionally, this is followed by many medium shots of the protagonist to establish their role and identify their key aspects as well as analysing their body language as the camera follows her to show how she is as a person and the character she portrays by observing her behaviour through these shots. Then there are long shots of the pool settings, showcasing the fun places that her and her friends hang out in. They also use lively, energetic camerawork to establish Cher’s world and personality. Rapid cuts and handheld-style movement mirror the fast-paced, carefree rhythm of teenage life in Beverly Hills. The camera often tracks Cher as she moves through her luxurious home, emphasizing her confidence and control over her environment. Close-ups of her outfits, computer wardrobe program, and accessories highlight her material focus while also inviting viewers into her perspective. The dynamic movement—especially during her introduction montage—creates a sense of momentum, making the audience feel swept into Cher’s curated, image-driven lifestyle from the very first minutes.
2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?
The camerawork in the opening of Clueless gives the audience clear clues about the setting, narrative, and character through movement, framing, and shot choices. Wide, bright shots of Beverly Hills locations immediately establish a wealthy, sun-soaked setting. Fast cuts and energetic camera movement signal a playful, light-hearted narrative tone. When the camera tracks Cher confidently walking through her house or lingers on close-ups of her clothes, technology, and routines, it reveals her priorities and personality—image-conscious, privileged, but charming. Point-of-view shots from her computer wardrobe program place us inside her world, suggesting that the story will be told through her perspective and shaped by her lifestyle.
Secondly, find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blogpost.
3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.
It is a medium close up of the protagonist and it is constructed this way in order to showcase his facial expressions for the audience to get an idea of how he is feeling since he looks sad so this demonstrates how he must be feeling upset over something. Furthermore, the hint of the trees emphasises the setting and since he is wearing a hoodie, he looks like he is searching for something in the dark. Additionally it shows hints of a crime genre due to the dark lighting and other aspects of mise-en-scene, such as costume which all create enigma and action codes due to the mysterious vibe and tension created by this shot. Lastly the camera shot emphasises the character's movement and thinking in order to let audiences know what his next move may be and it also shows that the camera is hidden behind trees, which may connote the idea of somebody watching him and shows the narrative through their perspective.
