Cinematography video feedback/learner response

 Cinematography video feedback/learner response

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

WWW:
  • good description
  • very good sound track
  • effective narrative
  • use of cross cutting
  • effective suspense
  • good cliff-hanger ending
  • good use of close-ups
  • enigma codes
  • hidden identity
  • framing
  • costume- hood on- all black- villainous character/ adds to narrative
  • steady hand-held camera
EBI:
  • Final POV shot was too long so these was a loss in suspense and tension at the end- could have turned it into a shot-reverse-shot and taken a shot of the same movements from a different angle and then gone back to the original POV.

2) Type up your feedback from fellow students.

WWW: There was a good description of the video itself. There was good variety of shots and camera angles/ movement and the mise-en-scene (lighting, props, costume) all build up[ tension and suspense as well as enigma codes to emphasise the dark and mysterious narrative. The sound choice was also effective as it played well along with the plot and was parallel to my shots.

EBI: The POV shot got mixed up with the over the shoulder shot and I should have switched them around and the POV shot (last shot) at the end was running for way too long so I could have cut it to a different angle of the same scene and back to the POV using shot-reverse-shot method.

3) Now reflect on your work and write your own summary of the comments and feedback you have received. Write three WWWs and three EBIs.

WWW:
  • The range and variety of camera shots were well established and used to build the narrative nicely.
  • The lighting was dark and cloudy and I only used street lights so it also built the mystery with enigma codes and established the dark and dangerous narrative.
  • The sound was parallel to my shots and the scene as it built tension to demonstrate the plot and purpose of the video and storyline.
EBI:
  • It lacked creativity and effects that could have been added within the editing and post-production process of building the video.
  • The ending was way too long and it should have been cut to create a shot-reverse-shot moment to make it more interesting and not lose tension but build it even more.
  • The over the shoulder shot and POV shot should have been switched around as the names were mixed up by accident. I also could have used the establishing shot either at the beginning or end rather than in the middle as it helps demonstrate narrative and thickens the plot as it gives viewers an idea of the setting and the scene before they start watching it fully.

4) Learner response: think about what you learned about cinematography making the video and also watching others. What will you do differently when you start the coursework in the summer? What tips or tricks have you learned from others that you can use next time? Are there any specific aspects of camerawork that you need to revise or practice?

I have learnt that cinematography is a very useful tool to help build narrative as it provides different angles and shots that viewers or audiences can see the scene through and it helps them determine their opinions and thoughts about the scenes in the media projects. In the summer, for my coursework I will definitely think about the structure of different shots and angles that can help to build narrative of whatever my coursework project may be. I will also (learning from observation of other people's projects) try use a wider range of shots and camera movement as well as angles that may make the project more interesting and create suspense or portray certain emotions in or about the project itself. In order to achieve the highest possible grade for my final coursework I will try my best to create the more interesting project and use my creativity and cinematography skills that I have picked up this term to do so. The one aspect of cinematography I need to revise is different types of camera movements and how they portray meanings through texts as I have seen from the videos of my peers and want to include in my work next time as well.

Finished recreation video scene

Link to original: (0:22 - 0:54) https://youtu.be/e8_Z7-97mIw Link to my video:  https://youtu.be/jYYWVSgewmY 100 word explanation: Me and my friends decided to recreate an iconic scene from Gossip girl where one girl being rude to another girl by not inviting her to the biggest party of the year. They girls wear sophisticated outfits to show that they are living their successful lives in the upper class world and to emphasise their class. There is also non-diegetic sound playing in the background, which creates tension and adds to the drama in the scene. The facial expressions of the girls reveal the personalities of each of the girls, which can also be seen by their behaviour in the scene.

Parallel and contrapuntal sound practical task

My video link: https://youtube.com/shorts/UEMq9-koHfQ Description: I did a montage of images under the violin version of a pop music sound that connoted elegance with the violin sound but also brightness, confidence and happiness due to it being a pop music sound. This genre often emphasises excitement and energy into a media text. The first couple of images in my video are contrapuntal to the sound used as they are in black and white so they connote depression, sadness, and gothic vibes, which contrasts the sound and the following images of pop art and colourful pictures that are more parallel to the music playing in the background.

Mise-en-scene recreation planning

Mise-en-scene recreation - full task list: Create a blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene recreation planning' and complete the following tasks: 1) Get into groups of up to four. Note: although the planning and filming can be done as a group, all students  MUST  edit their  OWN  version of the chosen scene. Make a note of who you are working with. Done with my friends (group of 4 including myself) 2) Create a  plan  of how you will do the recreation using  CLAMPS . For each aspect of mise-en-scene, work out how you will recreate it as accurately as possible to the original.  PLAN: Costume- the characters on the steps are wearing classy outfits and look sophisticated as they are the ones who are in control in this scene. The character of Jenny is wearing pink clothing, which shows how girly she is and how she aspires to be like the girls on the steps. Lighting - scene is in broad daylight in front of everyone at a public place. Actor placement, movement, ...
