Sound analysis

 Sound analysis: blog tasks

1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:
  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects
You also need to highlight or put in bold any use of media language.

In the film clip, there is non-diegetic sound (the song: Kids in America) while there is a montage of clips of teenagers having fun and the protagonist of the film living her best life. The song is a pop song and it refers to the pop and rock genre of the 1980s, bringing a sense of culture and music from the olden days since this is a 2000s movie. There is also diegetic sound when the protagonist's voiceover plays while she is explaining how she has a very normal life and introduces herself as a normal person, which is contrapuntal to the videos of her using a machine to pick our her outfit and speaking about her lawyers. This emphasises her high social class which opposes her words spoken in the voiceover sound. There are many sound bridges within the couple montages shown and there are other non-diegetic sounds/ songs playing such as "I'm just a girl", which highlights the whole plot of the movie as to the girl being clueless. Additionally, there is diegetic sound when the girl (main character) uses the machine to pick out her outfit and it makes certain noises, which illustrates fast and rapid growing technology and it's power in the early 2000s to help a girl pick out and analyse all of her outfits everyday. Lastly, the diegetic sound of the main character's expensive car vrooming again portrays her wealthy background and the dialogue between her and her best friend explains their friendship and their similarities in wealth and how they have so much in common such as them both being aspirers.

Finished recreation video scene

Link to original: (0:22 - 0:54) https://youtu.be/e8_Z7-97mIw Link to my video:  https://youtu.be/jYYWVSgewmY 100 word explanation: Me and my friends decided to recreate an iconic scene from Gossip girl where one girl being rude to another girl by not inviting her to the biggest party of the year. They girls wear sophisticated outfits to show that they are living their successful lives in the upper class world and to emphasise their class. There is also non-diegetic sound playing in the background, which creates tension and adds to the drama in the scene. The facial expressions of the girls reveal the personalities of each of the girls, which can also be seen by their behaviour in the scene.

Parallel and contrapuntal sound practical task

My video link: https://youtube.com/shorts/UEMq9-koHfQ Description: I did a montage of images under the violin version of a pop music sound that connoted elegance with the violin sound but also brightness, confidence and happiness due to it being a pop music sound. This genre often emphasises excitement and energy into a media text. The first couple of images in my video are contrapuntal to the sound used as they are in black and white so they connote depression, sadness, and gothic vibes, which contrasts the sound and the following images of pop art and colourful pictures that are more parallel to the music playing in the background.

Mise-en-scene recreation planning

Mise-en-scene recreation - full task list: Create a blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene recreation planning' and complete the following tasks: 1) Get into groups of up to four. Note: although the planning and filming can be done as a group, all students  MUST  edit their  OWN  version of the chosen scene. Make a note of who you are working with. Done with my friends (group of 4 including myself) 2) Create a  plan  of how you will do the recreation using  CLAMPS . For each aspect of mise-en-scene, work out how you will recreate it as accurately as possible to the original.  PLAN: Costume- the characters on the steps are wearing classy outfits and look sophisticated as they are the ones who are in control in this scene. The character of Jenny is wearing pink clothing, which shows how girly she is and how she aspires to be like the girls on the steps. Lighting - scene is in broad daylight in front of everyone at a public place. Actor placement, movement, ...
