Mise-en-scene recreation: Learner response
Create a new blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene video feedback and learner response'. Make sure your completed recreation video is uploaded to YouTube and embedded in the blogpost.
1) Type up your feedback from your teacher in full.
WWW:
- use of original video
- good editing
- very good facial expressions/body language
- exterior location
- very good planning
- good cinematography
- lighting
- included props
- some editing dialogue not in sync with clip (camera quality)
2) Type up a summary of the feedback you have had from the rest of the class - bullet points is fine.
WWW:
- good lighting, setting, sound track, acting, facial expressions and use of props such as the invitation and cinematography
- Audio dubbing wasn't fully in sync at the end and the location could have been better
3) Use all the feedback you've been given to write your own self-assessment of your video using WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If...)
WWW:
- good lighting, setting, sound track, acting, facial expressions and use of props such as the invitation and cinematography
- the camera quality was not that great so that could have been better
- audio wasn't in sync at the end due to camera quality on a different phone
4) Now reflect on your own work in more detail. How did your planning (script, shot list) help clarify and develop your ideas?
The planning, script and shot list shaped out every clip we had to record and all the minor details included in that clip were shown so it could easily be performed. For example, one clip was picking up the envelope (invitation) and one of the characters was giving the other a dirty look as she picked it up so that clip was filmed in 2 shots from different angles.
5) Thinking technically, how could you improve your work for future videos? (E.g. filming, editing, audio levels etc.)
I think the audio levels in my recreation were good but the audio of the dialogue at the end could have been louder and also when filming the last few clips my phone died so we had to use my friend's Samsung phone, which was poor in quality as the audio was not in sync with the clip when we filmed from her phone so I need to keep my phone charged next time when filming.
6) Finally, what have you learned regarding the importance of mise-en-scene in film and television? Write a paragraph to answer this.
I have learnt that mise-en-scene shapes a scene in film and TV and creates a deeper meaning to the scene being filmed as the different aspects in the frame connote different things. This is crucial in film and TV because it encompasses everything that appears before the camera and influences how audiences will interpret the scene. It is one of the core tools to visual storytelling. Mise-en-scene also establishes the world of the story through setting, time, place and culture conveyed, reveals character, shaped mood and atmosphere through facial expressions and body language of the characters and supports the theme and symbolism of the film or TV show. Overall, the main reason for it;s significance is because it transforms a script into a cinematic experience and shows how a director's vision, tone and meaning are communicated visually and emotionally to an audience.
