Mise-en-scene recreation - full task list:
Create a blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene recreation planning' and complete the following tasks:
1) Get into groups of up to four. Note: although the planning and filming can be done as a group, all students MUST edit their OWN version of the chosen scene. Make a note of who you are working with.
Done with my friends (group of 4 including myself)
2) Create a plan of how you will do the recreation using CLAMPS. For each aspect of mise-en-scene, work out how you will recreate it as accurately as possible to the original.
2) Create a plan of how you will do the recreation using CLAMPS. For each aspect of mise-en-scene, work out how you will recreate it as accurately as possible to the original.
PLAN:
- Costume- the characters on the steps are wearing classy outfits and look sophisticated as they are the ones who are in control in this scene. The character of Jenny is wearing pink clothing, which shows how girly she is and how she aspires to be like the girls on the steps.
- Lighting - scene is in broad daylight in front of everyone at a public place.
- Actor placement, movement, expression- the characters that are given the privilege to sit down on the steps are the ones in charge since they are hosting the biggest party of the school year and they give dirty looks to the other characters to show that they are the ones in power there and not the others.
- Make-up and hair- the two characters on the steps are wearing headbands which shows that they are super girly characters and they look very well presented. The other girls just have their hair in regular styles to show they are normal and they represent people that are not so powerful.
- Props- there is a golden envelope which is the invitation to Blair's party, which shows from the colour gold that it is a well known, highly sophisticated and classy but huge party to emphasise the power of Blair (the bully in the scene) as a character that holds much power over others as it seems that everyone wants to go to her party.
- Setting- on steps (in the actual scene they were the met steps, which are very famous to show how famous Blair is as she is hosting the biggest party in the school).
3) Write a script and shot list of every shot you will need for the 30-60 second recreation. Use as much detail as possible or alternatively take screenshots of the original scene to help you. Use the BBC Writers' Room script library to see what real film and TV scripts look like. For your shot list, you can create a table or list of every shot in the scene you are recreating. Here's an example from a previous Media student's coursework.
SCRIPT:
GOSSIP GIRL
SEASON 1 EPISODE 1
ALL CHARACTERS ARE ON THE MET STEPS BUT SERENA IS A FEW STEPS LOWER THAN THE REST OF THEM CONSIDERING HER AS THE OUTCAST SINCE SHE JUST CAME BACK FROM BOARDING SCHOOL.
SERENA
So,
She picks up the envelope on the steps while Blair gives her a dirty look
SERENA
When's the party?
Music track starts playing as Blair's friends gives Serena a dirty look and Jenny looks awkward. Serena then looks Blair up and down waiting for an answer, while Blair sighs.
BLAIR
Saturday.
Serena looks Blair up and down again to show that she is waiting for her to continue and invite her to the party.
BLAIR
and your kind of not invited.
Serena looks confused and upset looking at Blair and Blair's friend.
BLAIR
Since about 12 hours ago, everyone thought you were at boarding school
Blair's friend gives Serena a dirty look.
BLAIR
and now we're full. Jenny used up all the invites. (looks Jenny up and down)
JENNY
um... actually-
BLAIR
You can go now.
Jenny smiles at Serena and leaves. Serena smiles back at Jenny.
